End of the Line |
Description: |
Just down the hill from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, was the "College" station of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. The sole remaining P&LE passenger train, which ran until July 1985, started here every weekday morning for one trip to Pittsburgh and then came back in the evening. Not long after I made this picture, the train made its last run (you can see the discontinuance notice in the station window). June 1985 (date approx.) Unfortunately other signs of the P&LEs decline are in evidence: the hoppers on the left are in storage (note rust on the wheel tread); somebody told me that the railroad later sold a whole fleet of those hoppers to the Peoples Republic of China! Today you'd only find one track here (with concrete ties) operated by CSX. |

CSX Gray Area |
Description: |
Elsewhere in this album is a fine photograph by my friend Esther Fairchild of CSX "road slug" 2270 at Winchester, Virginia in August of 2011. Here is the same 2270 at Gary, Indiana in the Winter of 1988 wearing a much less attractive (to me, at least) coat of dull gray paint. Proof that some things DO get better as they age! (as always with me, "date approximate"). Note that in my picture the 2270 is mated to the 6489; Esther's picture shows it with the 6463! |

Now That's Something You Don't See Anymore |
Description: |
By Esther Fairchild. Esther didn't think of it as a photographic success, but there's too much good "old" stuff here to pass up. The scene is near "Ivy City" in North East Washington, D.C. in November of 1987. Among the things no longer seen: a Conrail "SW" type switcher with a Rio Grande box car and Conrail caboose on an industry track just the other side of the Amtrak "Northeast Corridor" main line. Then there's a pre-MARC evening commuter train on the B&O "Capital" subdivision featuring a Maryland Department of Transportation RDC (with the vestibule door open, no less). In the background, the Hecht & Co. (department store) warehouse. A true collection of antiques. Thanks, Esther, for letting me put this one up. |
