Album Info:New York Central Railroad initiated a "bulk-transfer" service called "Flexi-Flo" in the 1960s. The idea was that bulk commodities could be shipped by specially equipped rail cars to a transloading terminal where the commodity could be easily unloaded one truckload at a time as needed by customers. The rail cars within the terminal essentially became storage silos on wheels until completely empty. Since trucks could unload directly from the piping on the cars, no expensive fixed transloading equipment was necessary. The idea was a success and today many railroads as well as independent (third party) transloading outfits operate terminals all over the country.
